K-9 Ranger

Laguna Beach's K-9, Ranger, joined our police force in October 2014 thanks to generous donations from the Laguna Beach Woman’s Club and the Assistance League of Laguna Beach. Ranger is a Belgian Malinois who received several years of training in Holland prior to coming to the United States. Officer Zachary Fillers is Ranger’s handler. Together they have completed months of intensive training.

Officer Fillers has a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminology, Law, and Society from the University of California at Irvine. He graduated from the Orange County Sheriff’s Academy in 2009 and has been a Police Officer with the Laguna Beach Police Department since 2011. K-9 Ranger, the department’s third K-9, was named after fallen Laguna Beach Police Officer Jon Coutchie, who was once a United States Army Ranger. Ranger lives at home with Officer Fillers and is on-call 24/7.

The K-9 unit's primary responsibility is responding to burglary alarms and crimes-in-progress. Ranger and Officer Fillers also help locate hidden or fleeing suspects, evidence (including narcotics).
