Citizens on Patrol: Volunteers
Citizens on Patrol in Laguna Beach

Graduates of the Laguna Beach Police Department's Citizens Academy are eligible to participate in the Volunteer Citizens On Patrol program. This program for volunteers provides opportunities to supplement the Police Department's manpower by patrolling in the Volunteer Police Car, on Police Bikes, and on Foot Patrol in the Downtown area.

Citizens On Patrol are an extra set of eyes and ears for the officers.  These volunteers:

  • Learn the radio codes
  • Issue parking citations for problem violations
  • Interact with the public as an ambassador to the department
  • Provide Vacation Home Checks for residents
Many of our volunteers enjoy the challenges of patrol, and others have learned skills that make them a valuable administrative resource. Several volunteers have advanced their training to become reserve officers. Another C. O. P. is training in CSI photography. Volunteer Members have worked in almost every section of the department from Records, to Property, to Investigations.

Our Volunteers give back to the community through the hours they volunteer.  In the process they gain valuable insight into our community's law enforcement system. They are a very active group with ages ranging from 21 to over 80. Many lasting friendships have been developed within the group that adds to the satisfaction that comes with a job well done.

Participation in the Police Department's Citizens Academy gives citizens a unique look at law enforcement. We hope you find this interesting and will consider learning more. Completing the Academy is a first step. After graduating from the Citizen's Academy, you can fill out an application and be considered to become a part of this community-minded service group.

Becoming a C. O. P. Volunteer is an extremely exciting opportunity to work closely with the men and women who serve this community, while wearing the badge yourself!  For more information about becoming a C. O. P. Volunteer, or to get your name put on an interest list, contact Jim Beres, Police Department Civilian Supervisor, jBeres@LagunaBeachCity.net (949) 464-6669.
