Community Services
The Community Services Department is
comprised of 6.5 full-time and approximately 80 seasonal employees. They
provide a variety of recreation and cultural activities, and supplement
the social service and senior citizen needs in the community. There are
sports programs offered to both youth and adults, parenting and tiny tot
classes, emeritus courses as well as various dance and exercise activities.
The majority of the adult programs are self-sustaining, youth programs are
subsidized to a certain extent, and senior programs are offered at little
or no charge.
The department oversees a number of facilities including the:
- City Hall Recreation Building
- Lang Park Community Center
- Veteran's Memorial Community Center (Senior Center)
- Riddle Field
- Moulton Meadows Park
- Alta Laguna Park
Department staff issue park wedding permits, schedule garden tours, and coordinate
local film shoots. A quarterly program of activities is published and mailed
to all Laguna Beach residents.
The Director of Community Services also supervises the community pool.
Staff support is provided to the:
- Recreation Committee
- Housing and Human Affairs Committee
- Festival Coordinating Committee
The Community Assistance grant program is also administered by this department.
It provides special funds (totaling $175,000) to help support local community
organizations representing the arts and social services.
Two special programs are managed by this department:
- The Cold Weather Shelter ($10,000)
- The Festival Parking Plan ($28,000)
Revenues offset these costs.
The Department also manages parking programs at the Lumberyard lot, City
employees' parking lot, ACT V lot, Mermaid Parking Garage and Alice Court
Parking Garage. About $57,000 in direct costs
for part-time salaries and materials generate over $472,000 in annual parking
revenues from these five sites.
Class fees ($615,000), sports programs ($117,000), permit charges ($85,000),
parking revenue ($472,000), program advertising ($42,000) and special program
reimbursements ($25,000) generate a total of $1,356,000.
