What's the Difference Between Public and Private Sewers?

A property owner’s sewer pipes from their home or business are called “private service laterals” and are connected to larger “local City main lines”.  The main lines transport sewage to the wastewater treatment plant where the sewage is treated before disposal or reuse.

Private Property owners are responsible to properly operate and maintain their private service lateral line including the point of connection to the local City main line.  A property owner is responsible to complete necessary corrective measures to ensure the lateral is fully functional.  Corrective measures may include periodic video inspection, cleaning, repair or replacement of the line and connection joint.
