From the Dana Point Harbor Dredging Project website:
The Dana Point Harbor Department is now in the final stage of receiving regulatory approvals for routine dredging in the Harbor. The project, scheduled to begin in early 2008, will remove unwanted coastal sand that has collected in the main channel at the west breakwater.
Dredging is regularly performed in the harbor every 5-7 years to maintain navigable depths and widths.
About half of the dredging spoils will be used to replenish Dana Point Beaches. The other half will be hauled to the LA-3 disposal site located ~4 miles off the coast of Morro Canyon. The spoils to be disposed of at LA-3 do not meet the particle size criteria established to replenish the beaches - the particles are too small.
