MEMORANDUM
DATE: May 7,
2008
TO: City
Council
FROM: Kenneth
Frank, City Manager
SUBJECT: WEDNESDAY UPDATES
Residential Design
Guidelines – Winter & Company has prepared several chapters of the
Residential Design Guidelines. Based on staff’s direction, the format of the
document has been revised to more directly address the Design Review Criteria.
The Focus Group has reviewed the revised chapters and is pleased with the
updated format, although much work remains with respect to content. Staff has
directed the Consultant to move forward with the remainder of the draft
document. Once complete, staff and the Focus Group will review and provide
comments/corrections to the consultant. It is anticipated that a public
workshop on the completed draft document can be scheduled over the summer.
Great Park Presentation
– The Chief Executive Officer of the Great Park has offered to provide a 15
minute briefing and a question and answer session for the City Council to update
everyone on the status of the Great Park. If members of the Council want to
have such a briefing either at a City Council meeting or a separate session,
please let me know.
Sidewalk Washing –
Sidewalk pressure washing started this week in the downtown and will take
slightly more than one week to complete.
Housing Element Update
– At its meeting of May 7, the Housing and Human Services Committee will be
having a presentation of the draft Housing Element Update. Any comments will be
forwarded to the Planning Commission which will discuss the Housing Element at
its meeting of May 28.
Marine Safety Chief at the
Chamber of Commerce Luncheon – At last Wednesday’s Chamber luncheon,
Mark Klosterman presented an overview of Marine Safety operations to Chamber of
Commerce members and guests. The City’s Police Chief has been invited to speak
at the Chamber’s luncheon in June.
Street Resurfacing
– Roadway construction on Oriole Drive, Meadowlark Drive, Meadowlark Lane and
Bluebird Canyon Drive will continue for two more weeks. There will be no street
closures, but traffic delays of up to five minutes are expected during working
hours.
Orange County
Transportation Authority – Reps from OCTA were scheduled to provide an
update at the next Council meeting. However, because the lifeguard headquarters
was postponed until then – and there are five design review appeals – we have
delayed the OCTA report until July 1.
Free Compost Giveaway
-
Click Here for Flyer in PDF format. On Saturday, May 10th, from 8
a.m. to noon, Tierra Verde Industries and Waste Management of Orange County will
offer free compost to Laguna Beach residents. The compost will be available for
pickup at the Forest Laguna Canyon Parking Lot on the corner of Broadway and
Forest Avenue (across from the Festival of Arts grounds). This is a
self-service event, so residents should bring a shovel and a container for the
compost. The available supply is usually used up early in the day. The compost
is a rich, organic soil amendment that consists of composted, recycled green
waste collected as part of the City’s residential recycling program. Last year,
residents diverted 3,772 tons of green waste from entering the landfills.
