Something larger than life is making its move in Laguna Beach—and you won’t want to miss it.
Beginning May 29, the front lawn of City Hall will transform into an eye-catching outdoor art installation presented in collaboration with the Laguna Beach Arts Commission and the Festival of Arts, featuring three monumental chess pieces from the world-renowned Pageant of the Masters. Towering over visitors, “The Indian Chess Set” includes a King standing more than 13 feet tall, alongside a Bishop and Knight each over six feet high, sculpted by Pageant artisans Dickson Janda and Alexandria Trudgen.
Originally created for the 2025 Pageant, this striking tableau vivant was inspired by an intricate 19th-century ivory chess set from the Norton Simon Museum. Now, for the first time, these extraordinary sculptures step off the stage and into the heart of the community—offering a rare opportunity to experience the artistry of the Pageant up close.
But first, the pieces must make their grand entrance.
On Friday, May 29 at 8:30 a.m., the oversized chess pieces will parade across the street to City Hall in a playful public “art move,” creating a memorable moment for early risers, passersby, and camera lenses alike.
The installation will remain on view through July 24, perfectly timed to build anticipation for this summer’s Pageant production, The Greatest of All Time, opening July 9.
Visitors are encouraged to join the fun by participating in a social media contest: snap a photo with the chess pieces, post it on Instagram, and tag @FestivalPageant and @LagunaBeachCulturalArts for a chance to win a four-pack of tickets to the 2026 Pageant.
Whether you’re an art lover, a chess enthusiast, or simply curious, this installation is your chance to experience a piece of Laguna Beach’s iconic cultural tradition in a bold new way.
Because in Laguna Beach, even a game of chess becomes a work of art.
Your move.
