Disaster Preparedness Starts Here
Are you prepared for a disaster? Learn how at the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Academy. This 3-week program will meet Tuesday & Thursday evenings from Sept 29 — Oct 15, with a Final Exercise on Saturday, Oct. 17. You must attend all classes and the final exercise to complete the academy.

Know Your Limits September 5 from 7:00PM - 11:30PM @ The Promenade
Enjoying a night out in Lagna Beach? The Police Department will be providing free breathalyzer tests at this event to help educate the public about blood alcohol concentration levels and encourage everyone to make informed decisions about drinking.
This community education program is funded through an Office of Traffic Safety Grant.

Come Welcome Our Newest Fire Engine Mon, Aug 31 10:00AM @ Station 2
On Monday August 31 the Fire Department will be hosting a dedication ceremony for our new fire engine. The event will be held at Fire Station 2 (285 Agate St.) from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. All are welcome to be part of this special community tradition as we dedicate our new fire engine to serve and protect our community.
Fire Prevention
The Fire Department has started its new inspection cycle and is conducting annual inspections businesses, higher-hazard occupancies, and state-mandated facilities to ensure compliance with fire and life safety regulations. Fuel Modification Zone 19 (Diamond & Crestview) is scheduled to begin Tuesday, September 1. Work will generally consist of hand crews thinning and removing vegetation to approximately 50% native coverage, within 100 feet of homes.
Goat grazing activities continue. A single herd is currently located at FMZ 3 (Hidden Valley/Pacific). Following completion of zone 3, goats will be moved to FMZ 7 (Ceanothus).
Draft language has been approved by the Board of Forestry for Zone 0 and is expected to become law after approval by the Office of Administrative Law. A phased approach to implementing the new law would be implemented wherein the focus for the first 3 years will be education, with a total of 5 years to comply. New construction will be required to comply immediately upon approval of the Zone 0 language. Zone 0 is only applicable to the Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone.

Women’s Self Defense Workshop – September 12
Build confidence and learn practical personal safety skills at the City’s upcoming Women’s Self Defense Workshop. The class will provide participants with useful techniques and strategies in a supportive environment. Space is limited, so interested participants are encouraged to register early. Orange County artists are invited to submit their work in consideration for the 20th annual Juried Fine Art exhibition. Open to artists ages 18 and older. $25 entry fee allows for up to 3 submissions. Apply online. Selected artworks will be exhibited at Laguna Beach City Hall from September 28 to November 12, 2026.

Message from the City Manager
As we head into Labor Day weekend, I hope everyone has an opportunity to spend time with family and friends, enjoy our community, and do so safely.
Labor Day has traditionally marked the unofficial end of summer. Here in Laguna Beach, it also signals the beginning of a quieter time of year, when our residents can begin to enjoy a little more of our beautiful town with fewer crowds. Before we turn that corner, I wanted to take a moment to recognize the many City employees who have worked incredibly hard throughout another busy summer to keep Laguna Beach safe, beautiful, welcoming, and running well.
I wanted to take a moment to thank all of our first responders, from Fire to Police to Marine Safety, for navigating through a really challenging series of wave events. Which are not yet over.
Three people lost their lives during these various events, and that takes a big toll on first responders who pride themselves in saving people. We still do not know the direct cause of death of the Laguna Beach resident who so recently passed away while bodysurfing at Crescent Bay, but we know that he, his family, and other loved ones got up that morning not having any inkling that he would not see the end of the day.
Being part of that person’s rescue or recovery is emotional and traumatic, and while our first responders train for it, it takes a toll. My thoughts and best wishes go out to the deceased person’s family, and to all of our team members who willingly respond day in and day out to life and death situations.
I also want to recognize our Police Department for its hard work, both in the field and behind the scenes, to keep our community safe. That has included significant efforts this summer to prevent large groups from coming into Laguna Beach with the intent of causing the type of disruption and destruction we saw in neighboring communities. Much of that work happens quietly and out of public view, but it makes a real difference.
Our Fire Department continues to provide the highest standard of emergency medical response and fire safety to our community. Their work does not slow down during the summer. In fact, the demands only increase, and I am grateful for the professionalism and care they bring to every call.
Our Public Works staff also deserves tremendous credit. They spend long hours working in hot summer conditions to keep our City clean and beautiful while accommodating hundreds of thousands of visitors, not all of whom share the same reverence for our coastline and public spaces that those who call Laguna Beach home do. I am thankful for the pride they take in caring for this community every day.
Summer in Laguna Beach is also about community, culture, and the arts. Our Cultural Arts team once again brought people together through public art and performances. Sunset Serenades at the start of summer and Music in the Park both had another wonderful year and remain a special part of what summer in Laguna Beach means.
Our art festivals and everyone involved in making them possible also did a wonderful job showcasing the extraordinary artistic talent that has been a foundation of Laguna Beach for more than a century. I hope all of our artists had successful shows this year, and I appreciate the many people whose work helps sustain Laguna Beach as a community where the arts continue to thrive.
These are only a few examples. Across the organization, employees in every department have worked throughout the summer to serve residents, support businesses, maintain our infrastructure, manage an extraordinary number of visitors, deliver programs and services, and respond when our community needs us.
We do not get everything right all the time. No organization does. But I see firsthand how many people here work very hard and take tremendous pride in making Laguna Beach a special place to live, work, and visit.
Our employees have opportunities to work elsewhere, but they choose to work here in Laguna Beach. I am thankful for that choice, for their commitment to this community, and for the standard of excellence they strive to meet every day.
I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable Labor Day weekend.
