Between Montage Resort Drive and Catalina Street

Project Description

The proposed project will install planting and irrigation within the raised medians built by Caltrans along Coast Highway, between Montage Resort Drive and Catalina Street. Caltrans built the raised medians as part of their efforts to upgrade sidewalks on Coast Highway, between Moss Street and 7th Avenue, to meet current accessibility guidelines. Construction is scheduled for Fall 2026.

Project History

On May 5, 2021 Planning Commission approved DR 21-8883 and CDP 21-8884 for Caltrans to upgrade sidewalks on Coast Highway, between Moss Street and 7th Avenue. One of the conditions of the project approval was to study the installation of raised median islands for future landscaping by the City. Caltrans built four medians in the center of Coast Highway in 2025.

The Project will install drought-tolerant landscaping and a recycled water drip irrigation system (where available) in the medians. Irrigation sleeves were previously installed by Caltrans. Three of the four medians are currently tied into South Coast Water District’s Recycled Water Mains.

The project construction is only allowed between Labor Day and Memorial Day (non-summer months).

Construction of the landscaping will require scheduled temporary lane closures to accommodate the work. Construction will take place on Coast Highway Monday through Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. with temporary lane closures.
