CERT Academy

The annual CERT Academy consists of approximately 25 hours of classroom and hands-on training. Classes meet regularly and culminate in a drill to apply the skills and knowledge obtained during the classroom sessions. CERT training is free of charge but requires a time commitment because you must attend all sessions to complete the program.

The program covers: disaster preparedness, fire safety, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, CERT Organization, disaster psychology, CERT and terrorism, traffic control and scene management.

Applications are open to people at least 13 years old who live, work, or attend school in Laguna Beach. Graduates of the program will have the opportunity to join the City of Laguna Beach's Community Emergency Response Team. When a disaster strikes, CERT volunteers take action by:

  • Checking on neighbors
  • Suppressing small fires
  • Conducting light urban search and rescue
  • Providing emergency first aid and comfort
  • Helping to organize and direct spontaneous volunteers

You weren't able to attend the 2025 Academy? Contact CERT to be added to the interest list for the 2026 CERT Academy.

CERT Program

Our Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is an organized and trained group of volunteers ready to assist in case of a disaster. After completing the CERT Academy, individuals may decide to join the CERT program to officially be requested by the City of Laguna Beach to respond during a disaster. CERT volunteers also assist the city by sharing preparedness information with the community, providing traffic control at events, conducting fire watch, and other opportunities. CERT Academy graduates must complete a background check and take additional training.
